by Angie, Bob, Jared, Mahima, Sophy and Taylor.
an exquisite corpse haiku, every line had to include one of these words:
cheese, curses, music, run, swim, turtle.
I
Cheese dried by the scorching sun
Music swam across the wind.
Curses, cheddar-head!
Cursing music blazes
Fire that never stops.
Turtles go swim, now!
Music is like snow
it falls like soggy cheese puffs
curses the dancing fin
II
Music through water
Down the runny stream they go.
Turtles will eat too
Curses are bad for you,
your turtles, and your inward
Leaves taking a swim
Music pumps my blood
Music swims the veins in me.
Run from the curses, run turtles!
Don't pick up the phone
Turtles will discover
the cheese is in the hard dirt
Curse the land below
III
Music makes me dance
curses. Turtles make me run
cheese makes me sing high.
Run away from here
You will never swim again
run to the moon's glow
Turtles eat the snow
Say cheese! Lil turtles, say cheese!
Swim across the pond!
The cheese blew away
Take the money and run like flowers
of mozzarella.
IV
Stars sing soft music
Wind swims in chocolate rain
in curses in spring
Run in the light rain
Demonic flowers bloom upward
Towards sitar music.
Bob cursed the turtles
He left the turtle in the mud
shouting, "run, buddy!"
Run in the cold wind
Turtles dirtied in the ground
That got caked in blood!
V
Turtles run with leaves
free in the dream swim of wind
Nature made cheeses
God! Curse turtles, man!
They swam across my hurt foot!
Swim away from it
Nature caresses turtles
blue cheese still calls me to her
run in the cold snow
Dip in the cursed sun
that had cursed blood in his veins.
The cheese swam in ponds
VI
run toward winter's end
curse the rain and chilli snow
swim across the music
Down the street turtles!
Away from the thorny curse
Music howls with trees
bare in winter's cheese
Swim int he summer's winds
dive into life's cake
That has darn turtles in it!
The cheese blew over the pond.
They will steal the earth

There is no more ground
by Mahima Rupakula
There is no more ground
Ever sturdy and living
And there is no more soil
Though it feels so real
Never forget to try, Mahima,
Never forget to go fly
There is a big cloud-
Where you can spread your wings
There, I hear a voice;
In its tone
Is caring, something you’ve never heard here:
Ridhima, my sister,
Away from the rain I now escaped, come!
A replacement poem based on "There is another sky”
by Emily Dickinson
There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

Grunged Dream
by Angie Gomez
What happens to a dream that grunged?
Does it rot in your in your head for eternity,
Like a bad memory?
Or is it like an idea that physique,
And never came to be?
Does it still cling on to you
Like an infant to their mother?
Or does it crystallized and sugar over
Like a syrupy sweet?
Or haunt you in your sleep,
Or does take rest along with you.
A replacement poem based on A Dream Deferred
by Langston Hughes
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
like a heavy load.

A replacement poem based on If
by e. e. cummings
If moles were exceptional,
And water was chocolate rain,
And lice were pets,
And a truth ain't a truth,
But stuff could stop wrong,
For in someway a super predicament,
You would become you.
If moon was Maine and when was wince,
And what was waste, and white was orange,
There may be any acceptance
For through whatever effervescence
I would have been I.
If hate was soft and cubes were circular
And anger were actually and sighs were silly
What-not wouldn’t be fairly
Yet everybody everywhere nearly
For if where was warily
We would believe we.
A replacement poem based on If
by e. e. cummings
| If freckles were lovely, and day was night, And measles were nice and a lie warn't a lie, Life would be delight,- But things couldn't go right For in such a sad plight I wouldn't be I. If earth was heaven, and now was hence, And past was present, and false was true, There might be some sense But I'd be in suspense For on such a pretense You wouldn't be you. If fear was plucky, and globes were square, And dirt was cleanly and tears were glee Things would seem fair,- Yet they'd all despair, For if here was there We wouldn't be we. |

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
By Fareen Ali
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader is an action-packed adventure with talking animals, sea serpents, and hidden treasures. Beating out the first two Narnia movies, this movie has an unforgettable story with tons of magic, action, and mystery. It is the story of Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, and their cousin, Eustace Scrubb who find themselves in the land of Narnia, and venture out to solve the the mystery of the green mist, which is a mysterious light green mist that devours people. However, the movie had some flaws, like some silly dialogue, and scenes that did not make sense. In general, The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, is a movie treat for the entire family.
Movie rating: PG
Movie Meter: 79 out of 100.

Current
by Mahima Rupakula
A current is a strong force
As strong as a mountain
Still a current can be as gentle as a drop of water
People have currents
Flowing through the brain and the vein, moving us along because
A current is a strong force
A current could be feeling
Strong like anger
Still a current can be as gentle as a drop of water
Confidence is a current
Moving you on until it is blocked because
A current is a strong force
When things fall in the way you feel as if
There is no way to make your current soft
Still a current can be as gentle as a drop of water
I found a friend
To remove stones, so the current can move because
A current is a strong force
Still a current can be as gentle as a drop of water

Chocolate Pudding
by Zeynep Sen
It’s sweet and brown like chocolate frown
Creamy and soft like the clouds
Humans enjoy it very much
It’s made with cocoa powder
Every time the crowd gets louder
It’s sweet and brown like chocolate frown
You fill your spoon to the top
And gulp it all down
Humans enjoy it very much
When you’re about to eat your last spoon
It’s your most enjoyed piece
It’s sweet and brown like chocolate frown
You go to the cooking pot
And find out the joy is back
Humans enjoy it very much
You scoop some more into your bowl
And it tastes like heaven with your soul
It’s sweet and brown like chocolate frown
Humans enjoy it very much

Rain, Gray Days and Cold
by Bob Marcacci
Rain, gray days and cold
weather. Go to work
again. Go to sleep.
Try to dream. Try
to think of that book.
Rain, gray days and cold
winter blues make me
tired. Where do I go
again. Go to sleep
to forget. Listen
to the drops on the roof.
Rain, gray days and cold.
Who calls me?
Where are you?
Again, go to sleep
and tomorrow comes
even if no one believes
rain, gray days and cold
again. Go to sleep.

Staying in Las Vegas
by Josh Bao
As the plane touched down in LAS, I looked out the window. The pilot had just said that Vegas was hot and tropical, but as I looked, Vegas did not look like the way its reputation boasted of. I was here for the AMSP Winter Camp. We were going to stay in Las Vegas for four days. I joined my group, as we filed off the plane. We went to the baggage claim, and there were many gaming machines for gamblers. When everybody had their bags, we left for the pickup area. We waited for a while, and my group’s teacher told us to look for a “silver KIA.” We waited for a while until we saw the car.
All four of us crammed into the car, and our driver took us to the University of Las Vegas (UNLV). We checked in and got the key cards to our dorms. Each room had two beds, so I assumed that we had roommates. I waited for my school group to come, but they didn’t come. Eventually, we had to go to dinner, so I went with my original group. We went to the ballroom in the university, and we ate dinner. After dinner, we left into one of the buildings to have an orientation.
In the middle of the orientation, my friend Jared came, and we were the only people from our school there. They announced houses and groups, and then we went to see a movie. There was two choices: October Sky and How to Train a Dragon. I watched “October Sky,” and when the movie was almost done, we finally saw our group. My roommate was Rohit. The rest of my group got settled, and we talked. Then we realized that we had to share bathrooms with four people. Luckily, our neighbors were Ken and Matthew, unlike Javid and Jared, who were sharing bathrooms with my original group.
We talked for a long time, and my friends ate their dinner. Then, we brushed teeth, and did all of our regular “before bed” rituals. Finally we went to bed.
The next day we went to breakfast, and ate. During breakfast, we had a fun time taking Javid’s pencil box, and hiding it. When we finished breakfast, we went to math class. We spent the morning doing math problems, and learning faster solutions. Then, when we were finished, we went to have lunch. We ate, and kept hiding Javid’s pencil case. After lunch we went to our dorms for some time. Then we went to our house meeting, where we played a game Detectives, Thieves, Robbers (DTR).
When we were finished, we were allowed to go to our dorms for bed. Again, we went to bed, and did our rituals. It was funny, because Jared played a prank on us before we went to bed. The next day, I woke up a little earlier, and I prank called Jared. Then our floor supervisor, called us all up for breakfast. The day went by just like the day before, but this time we had to do a puzzle during our house meeting. We only completed one puzzle, but that is because one of the other puzzles was missing a lot of pieces.
When we went to bed, I felt really happy, because this camp was really exciting. The next morning, the morning was the same, but we were supposed to take a practice MathCounts round. We did many worksheets, and at the end, they announced those who had went to the final round. Among them was Ken Tanaka, but unfortunately, he lost to an eighth grader on the last question.
At the house meeting, we had to build a bridge out of spaghetti. We made many bridges, and balanced 3 candies. However, there was an annoying kid, who kept running up the stairs with members of his group, and so we had to build a security system. Finally, we finished, and our group waited for Mr. Bal to come heck on us, and then we pranked him.
The next day was our trip to Hoover Dam. We packed up, and then left to the cars. We spent the morning admiring the sights of the magnificent life-sustaining dam. When we returned to the university, I bid farewell to my school group. Then my own group left, and surprise, surprise I saw my old school group. Their story was that they missed their flight. We were all trying to get on the 6:30 flight, and we actually made it. I will always remember that trip.

Marcacci’s Sadness Meltaways
by Bob Marcacci
1 cup unsalted sunrays, at room temperature
½ cup itching powder
2 cups all-purpose knock-knock jokes
½ cup ground giggles
1 cup chopped cheers
½ cup powdered joy buzzers
Using an electric whizgig, bray the sunrays in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add the itching powder and bray until well chuckled. Bray in the knock-knock jokes, ground giggles and chopped cheers. Divide the guffaw in half, forming each half into a gewgaw. Wrap separately in hilarity and chill until silly, about 30 minutes.
Preheat the horselaugh to 325 degrees F.
Working with half of the chilled guffaw at a time while keeping the rest in the jester, roll two tickles full between your palms into balls. Arrange the balls on a large baking cackle, spacing them 1/2–inch apart.
Grin the chuckles until golden brown on the bottom and just pale golden on top, about 18 minutes. Cool the chuckles for five minutes on a baking cackle, and then toss the warm chuckles in the powdered joy buzzers. Transfer the joy buzzer-coated chuckles to a side-splitter to glee completely. (The chuckles can be prepared two days ahead. Store in an airtight jeer at room temperature). Sift additional powdered joy buzzers over the chuckles, if desired, before teasing.

Fareen's Advice
Hey Fareen,
One of the 7th graders thinks im trying to show off because I hang out with other 7th graders and they use profanity against me. I can't even get near my friends when they are looking. There are only two people who do this.

Hello MSWR,
There is a word for this kind of behavior and it’s called bullying. And bullying is SO NOT okay. These are some techniques that could possibly help:

Sports- Live!
By Joshua Bao
Life at Magnolia Science Academy is now fairly under control. Most problems we faced in the first few weeks have disappeared, and new ideas are flowing in. That includes sports! We have developed Soccer Club, for anybody who wants to learn or play soccer. However, if you are interested, please bring cleats and shin guards, or else you won’t be allowed to play. The Soccer Club had a very exciting soccer game with the teachers on Wednesday, October 6. It was awesome! The teachers and staff who participated are: Mr. Saka, Mr. Marcacci, Mr. Bal/Kerem, Mr. K, and Mr. Schmidt. First, the teachers played small games against rotating teams, and then the final was the boys against the teachers and the girls.
It was a tough match, and I assume everybody had a lot of fun. Mr. Marcacci scored and so did the students. The teachers played exceptionally well- even our best players couldn’t take them that easily! In the end, it was a tie match, 1-1. Everybody went home, but before that, we had a big group picture, with all the participants.
We not only have soccer, but we also have ping pong! Every Friday, we meet in the hallway, to play some ping pong a.k.a. table tennis. If you are interested in trying out for the team to participate in the MSA regional tournament, grab a permission slip from Mr. Saka for more details. We will be staying until seven just like Future City and Lego Robotics.
Team Sports now play different sports, depending on what we play in PE. If you are interested in playing sports or want to get some exercise, come to the PE area after school on Mondays and Thursdays, first session (3:05-3:50).
If you are interested, in any of the above, just come and enjoy!!

Picnic
by Hibah Wasim
On Wednesday, September 29, MSASC had their first school picnic. Many parents helped out for supervising students and games. Some helped with the food. Mostly everyone brought food to share. There were hotdogs and burgers, samosas, and pizza. For fruits there were strawberries and watermelons. There were also chips for snacks. For sweets there were brownies cookies. “The food was really good,” said Anushi Singhal.
The drinks were very cold, which was good for a hot day and the sixth graders who came from P.E. There were juice, soda, and really "cold" water.
After the food, everyone played games. A few days before the picnic everyone picked which activity they would like to do in their SSR period.
One game was the Bean Bag Toss which each classes’ representatives stood in a line and took turns throwing the bean bags five times.
Another game was the egg race. It was that you would have a spoon which had an egg on it and you weren’t allowed to drop or you would have to start all over again.
A game that no one really knew about was the Oreo game. To play, we had to put an Oreo on our foreheads, and then try to eat it without touching it with your hands. It was very fun everyone who played said. The only disgusting thing was that if your Oreo fell down you wouldn’t get a new one. You would just eat it. Some people were cheating which isn’t good. (Don’t you agree?)
A very disgusting game was the yogurt game. In the yogurt game was a pan that had yogurt. In it you had to find a penny. You were only allowed to use your tongue to find the penny. Nick, a boy in 6B got a bloody nose because he was playing this game.
Another disgusting game was Bobbing for Apples. The game was about trying to get as much of apples in 10 seconds with your mouth. The game was disgusting because every time someone put their mouth in the water, the teachers didn’t put clean water in it. Unhealthy!
A game that was fun, but no one really knew how to play was the three-legged race. In it two people tied their legs together and ran.
A game that no one heard of was the Hackie Sack race. To play you have to put a sack in between your legs and run with it. Whoever finishes first is the winner. It was fun and at the same time confusing.
To our conclusion the picnic was great, but also disgusting. Because of this we learned that the rules should be clearer and each teacher should look after only one particular game.

Murder
by Jared Gacusan
As the ripples faded from this dirty lake, my heard beat came to a stop.
With a heavy heart and a twisted mind, I was consumed with guilt.
As time ticked past, this hole began to grow. my feet were rooted to this spot.
I wanted to cry.
I wanted to die
but I knew what I put to rest.
